Many women pay attention to their hand and nails, they put accessories such as ring, bracelet or polishing their nails and giving it beautiful colors. Sometimes they use extension to decorate their nails, and some of them only use nail polish to give their nails more attractive look. The most traditional artificial nails might be the acrylic nails, and the most recent may be Shellac nails. How are they different, here is some brief information on both acrylic nails and shellac nails.
Artificial nails or also known as fake nails, false nails, fashion nails or nail extension are nail coverings placed over fingernails and act as a fashion accessories. Artificial nails are not a replacement for natural nails, but it is installed as an extension of natural nails. When applying nail extensions usually there are two methods to do them, it is called tips and forms. Tips are made from plastic plates that have nail shape. Then the fake nail is glued on the end of natural nails. Form is the nail shape plastic which may come in lot variation from simple color to some flamboyant design such as animal print or mixed metallic color. After the form is applied, then we can choose what kind of fake nails we wish to use. The option are acrylic, gel and shellac. But in this article we will only talk about acrylic nails and shellac nails.
Acrylic nails is fake nails which are made from a mixture of a polymer powder and a liquid monomer for example ethyl methacrylate. This mixture will harden in 20-30 seconds after the application and continues to harden to final hardness usually around fifteen minutes. The character of acrylic nails are, it has a less natural look, especially when they are not applied correctly, the acrylic nails also reported to cause a sore nail beds as the acrylic cures. Acrylic nails are typically less expensive, most of nail salons have a price range from $30-$60 for a full set of a new acrylic nails. The cost for the fill-ins may range from $15-$30. Acrylic nails also reported can damage the nail beds, and create a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria. Acrylic nails also dangerous when remove incorrectly since it may take layers of the natural nail away. Acrylic nails are very strong and robust but are not flexible. Shellac nails is a patent pending formulation of solvents, monomers and polymers that are hypoallergenic. Shellac nails is a brand of gel nails produced by a company named Creative Nail Design (CND). Shellac gel nails does not contains formaldehyde, toluene or BDP. The company claimed that the shellac gel nails needs no time to dry and the nails will have a “14 day wear mirror finish”. When applying shellac nails the beautician may file, shape and then push your cuticle back. Because it will interfere the polish adhering your fingers, oil is not commonly used when applying shellac nails. After the treatment, nails are given base coat, at least two coats of color and a top coat. Between the appliance of both base coat and top coat, nails are dried using a UV lamp for about 30 to 60 seconds. The whole process takes about 45 minutes and at the end the nails does not need extra drying time. It is claimed that shellac nails can last up to four weeks, some has claimed it can last up to sixth week, the nails has a shiny finish and does not chip either. The downside of using shellac nails are, it might be hard to remove them since it consist of so many hardened layers of nail polish, the only way to remove it is to soak the nails into strong acetone which may make our nails very dry especially those with sensitive skin. Repeated application of shellac nails also can cause natural nails to brittle, peeling and make the nails weak, it was caused by the UV light and the abrasive removal method.
The difference between the two of them are what material those artificial nails are made of. Acrylic are made of polymer powder and a liquid monomer, while shellac on the other hand made from a mixture of a nail polish and gel. Acrylic can be used to make the nails longer while shellac is like nail polish, used to gives color and decorate the nails in various color design. If you look for a more natural look then it is recommended to get shellac nail, but if you want a more flamboyant look then it is recommended to use acrylic nails. Also pay attention on the health side by applying both of them, since the repetitive application may affect your nails health.
