Vanishing Creatures

When something moves Anita Greenspan Motherbaugh, she springs in to action. She has chosen to do something to raise awareness about the rapidly declining state of our wildlife habitats by creating Vanishing Creatures, a line of gorgeously designed, hand-carved chocolates that are packaged in a reusable “box” that repurposes in to an elegant candleholder or fanciful bird feeder.
The money goes to Wildlife Trust, an international group of scientists that are known for their innovative research on the intricate relationships between wildlife, ecosystems and human health.
“All the consumer choices we make are affecting their habitats," Anita says. "What people really don’t seem to understand is that our habitat is so closely connected to theirs. And once theirs goes, ours is next.”
Anita’s passion for art and animals is what has fueled this project. With noted eco-designer Marco DiMaccio, the two of them have put a new spin on the concept of recycling and created awareness about consumption at the same time. An elephant head, a polar bear head, a hippo head, all made out of quality chocolate and displayed as though they were a hunter’s prize possession, certainly gives one pause. “Sometimes we’re asked, ‘do you know that these look mounted?’ And I say, yes I do.”

The irony is clearly delicious.
