Uninterrupted Eye Contact

Uninterrupted Eye Contact

It’s been a long month—a month filled with moving, cleaning, traveling, working, repairing, entertaining, mouse hunting and child rearing. I feel like I’ve hardly spent any time with Joel—though we’ve spent almost every waking moment within five feet of each other. But last night I wanted to bond and I suddenly found myself in the bathroom alone with Joel—and all the kids were in bed (get your mind out of the gutter people).

Joel

Joel, my much younger man, turns 33 this week. Even Joel is surprised he is so old—he Facebooked that he “doesn’t believe it” (sure Joel when you said my turning 40 was no big deal). No one else thinks he’s old. I had a friend this week remark how much muscle he had—and another friend text me to tell me how wonderful he was—and another friend was totally impressed that he is so much younger than me (not sure if he was impressed with me or impressed with Joel). But, what happens when Joel, himself, suddenly thinks he is old?

We Are Here to Train You to Be a Human Being

We are here to train you to be a human being

Lucy is either the baby of the family—and spoiled by her big sisters—OR an only child—and spoiled by everyone else (while her sisters are at their dad’s). She is especially spoiled by our sweet friend Mai. The last time Mai came over, she brought a box of cookies. Mai tried to nicely teach Lucy to share her cookie. But Lucy, in her toddler wisdom, did not want to. Lucy also wanted to take one bite of a cookie, put it back in the box, and then start on a new cookie. And repeat.

Home Sweet Home

This month was moving month for us. After three years in Venice, CA, our family made a BIG move—from a 2 bedroom/1bath apartment where we were 2 blocks from the beach, surrounded by cement and a steady stream of campers—to a larger “cabin” in Topanga, CA, surrounded by oak trees and a steady trickle of a creek. When I first moved back to Los Angeles in 2007, someone told me they could see me living in either Venice or Topanga—so I guess it is fitting that I try both. What follows is a list of top ten cons and pros of our new digs after our first week:

How to Talk to a Tween

“Tween” is a label people use these days for those children who are in between being a little kid and a teenager (ages 9-12). And yes, they do seem to exhibit their own unique personality traits—switching suddenly and randomly from an innocent child to a sassy adolescent and then immediately back again. Recently I got an email from my tween, Sami. The subject was “Mother” (that’s her new name for me—no more mommy or even mom —just “mother”—not sure why…):

Edward Prefers Cougars

Edward Prefers Cougars, from the movie Twilight

The movie Eclipse (part three of the Twilight series) came out on June 30th—but I won’t get to see it until it comes out on DVD since I have little kids around. So when is that? January, perhaps? But I hear it’s a good one. So good that my sister took the day off work to see it, facebooked about its quality, and then sent me a link that had to do with the movie. I didn’t immediately check the link since I thought maybe it was a spoiler about the movie.

10 Days in Seattle

Seattle skyline

Despite its bad wrap for constant rain, summer in Seattle is a well-kept secret. August is usually a good bet that you will have some perfect 80-degree days with brilliant blue skies. This kid-friendly city is surrounded by evergreen trees, clean lakes and bays, and is a bevy of family fun. Here is a tried and true ten-day itinerary for Seattle with kids (just check the ten-day weather forecast to see if you will need your umbrella):

Day 1: Seattle Center

Bras

bras and bra shopping

The other morning I found Lucy in the living room playing with my only bra, trying to figure out if she should wear it like a scarf or a hat. Well, that’s not actually entirely true…it’s not my only bra, it is my only bra that fits…but that’s not really true either. It doesn’t fit. It’s the only bra that I have that sort of fits, but it also is sort of too big and sort of broken (only one clasp hooks and the other is bent at a strange angle that pokes me).

The Segway, the Marine, and the Mama Bear

Summer has finally arrived and we live in no better a location than Venice Beach, CA—sand, sun, and saltwater—what could be better? So on one of our first days of summer, Joel and I took a walk down the Venice boardwalk with Lucy in the stroller. Of course Lucy fell asleep and then Joel and I happened upon the Calypso Tumblers, my favorite performers in Venice. We hadn’t seen them since last summer so we stopped to watch.

Drum Roll...I Had a Night Out!

Kids sleeping

After approximately two years, I had a night out. Of course it took me turning forty, and the wiliness of an old college friend, but still, a night out is a night out. “You’re doing something for yourself?” my mom remarked. Okay, sure, my two older children are only with us part of the time, and yes, we could easily hire a sitter for Lucy, but we just haven’t. We like spending time with our kids. But Joel volunteered to stay home with all three girls and it was a hard thing to turn down.
