Life of the Lesbian Breadwinner

Life of a Lesbian Breadwinner

For so many years, gay and lesbian families have been considered "unconventional," or "non-traditional." But if you take out the same sex part of it, just how unconventional are they?

Julianne Moore Thinks The Kids Are All Right!

Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right

Julianne Moore is a person who is not afraid to take chances in her work. She's played a porn star, a person with multiple chemical sensibility, and The Big Lebowski's daughter, so to imagine her as a lesbian, who is "married" to Annette Bening in the film The Kids Are All Right was not only easy, it was quite blissful. Sitting a few feet away from her listening to her chat about how much she loves Lisa Choldenko's work as a director, she is every bit as elegant and earthy as one would imagine.

Contest! The Kids Are All Right

The Kids Are All Right by Lisa Cholodenko unconventional family

There's a great line in the movie The Kids Are All Right where all the lead characters are sitting around a dinner table and Mark Ruffalo toasts to "the unconventional family." It sort of says it all in a way that's fun, witty and we here at Goodkin feel is clearly something to toast about.

Lisa Cholodenko, Director: The Kids Are All Right

The Kids Are All Right by Lisa Cholodenko

Lisa Choldenko films have a unique, sexual energy running through them. She is a master at creating hip, stylish environments where boundaries are blurred and people act on their Freudian impulses. Her movies are a little like watching a train wreck filled with attractive, slightly intoxicated passengers crashing into one another finding some pleasure on the aisle floor. And yes, it is impossible to turn away.

Goodkin was part of the Los Angeles press junket for the up-coming film, The Kids Are All Right. The film is the first mainstream look at the possibilities of what can happen when the children of a lesbian couple grow up and have the desire to meet the anonymous sperm donor who helped bring them to life.

Bring on the Tiny Revolution!

When Meredith Alexander of Milk + Bookies told me about Courtney and BreeAnne Clowdus, the ladies of Tiny Revolutionary, they immediately sounded intriguing. “They make amazingly cool t-shirts,” she told me, “that are tied in with a variety of non-profits and they’re two women, with a daughter…”

Mommy Mettle

It was the end of an era. No more button-down shirts for Anakin. Suddenly it was crew necks only. The agony of what we were losing shot through us last January as we signed up for his season ski pass. The previous year he’d skied free, but they took a picture of him anyway, and when we found out that printing the pass (optional for five-year-olds) cost $20, we said, no thanks. This time the young woman at the desk asked if we wanted to use last year’s picture, adding, “’Cause, uh, it’s pretty cute.”

Huh?

Mommy Number Two

A mother with her son

Last week, we were in another oedipal phase, Anakin—my “adopted son”—and I. It’s a bizarre term to use for this child who I have been there for every step of his creation. But the fact remains that he did not grow in my body, but under my watchful fingers, undulating beside me at night, transforming Kim’s belly to a radiant full moon.
